Known as the “Mistress of Soul”, a title given her by a local promoter/producer, Jayna Blackwell has been singing since she was four years old. Singing first in church you could often find her in the youth and young adult choirs of various local churches. While still holding on to her gospel roots, Jayna began singing R&B professionally in the early 90’s and she hasn’t stopped yet. Her eclectic musical taste and style has enabled her to develop a voice that includes genres such as R&B, Funk, Jazz and even Rock & Roll.
Jayna credits her first band; ThrillTrain for opening her up to singing Rock & Roll and credits Mr. Barron Edwards for strategically placing her in his Motown Revue Tribute Show and his R&B show band, forcing her into an exciting new world of professional singing.
Jayna quickly became known as an established background vocalist supporting several local bands and solo artists over the years. She often says her “experiences have shaped the voice you hear today” and credits her family and peers for pushing and loving her back to center stage.
The year 2014 marked a career turn for Jayna as she was again nominated and awarded the “Best Neo-soul Performer” by the Bay Area Black Music Awards and was signed and also made the First Lady/President of the record label “Curency Kingz Entertainment” (CKE) by the label’s CEO, Kenneth Christian.
She has since been nominated and honored with many accolades and her newest single “That’s My Song” which features Ken’Yaun has just been released by C-Town Records a hot Hip Hop & R&B independent label based out of Cleveland, Ohio and distributed worldwide by Centurian Music Group.
Jayna is looking forward to the release which will be her first nationally promoted single. Reached by phone in Cleveland, C-Town Records President Gregory Beasley adds: “The initial response to the single has been great! We dropped the single July 21st with a LIVE global kickoff on Radio station 985 The Boom in Texas. Top mix show DJ’s around the country such as Dessert Storm Radio’s DJ Verbal Klint, DJ Mack Ditty (NY), The World famous DJ Smitty (PA), Harlem’s DJ Les Love, DJ Mingo (Atlanta) DJ JackHammer of the Northern California Hit Squad DJ’s), DJ D-Money of Fresh Juice (Seattle) DJ Russ Dogg (Ohio) and Hotline Radio’s DJ Mike Styles (NY) are all loving the track and were some of the very first Deejays to play it since its release. We thank them for their early support.”
